Welcome to Shebandowan Films!
Established in 1996 to ensure the representation of Northwestern Ontario
in the Canadian film industry, Shebandowan Films
co-owned by Ron Harpelle and Kelly Saxberg has developed
into the leading film and video production company
in the region. Kelly Saxberg has a continued presence in the
Manitoba film industry with over ten years of collaboration
and work with Les Productions Rivard, the National Film Board of Canada
Prairie Region and formerly with Credo Entertainment. “Seeking
Bimaadiziiwin” is her debut as a fiction director
on a 30 minute drama that tackles depression and suicide among
First Nations youth; she is a Co-director/Co-producer with Dave
Clement.
This film is part of a larger series with Executive
producer Dr. Paul Mulzer and writer Michelle
Derosier and the First
Nations Initiative of the St Joseph’s Care group.
Shebandowan Films produced Banana
Split, (2002) winner of the 2004 Deborah Fletcher Award for Excellence
in International Development Filmmaking and Dorothea
Mitchell: A Reel Pioneer, (2006) a documentary film about Canada's
first female amateur filmmaker. In addition to our
documentaries, Shebandowan Films also developed The
Fatal Flower Project which resulted in, among other things, The
Fatal Flower, winner of the 2003 Burrit/Thompson Award. We produce
documentaries, dramas, music videos, commercials,
corporate videos, and educational films.
A few of our most recent projects are, Turning
Points for Teens, a 14 part video series
about body image among young women, and Bottoms
Up, a short comedy about the restoration
of the Finnish Labour Temple in Thunder Bay starring
Ivanka, the Slobjevian polyester princess. We are
also working on Citoyen du Monde,
a six-part documentary series on Canada’s
role in international development for Les Productions
Rivard. The series will be shot in French and English
and will combine the talents of Ron Harpelle and
Kelly Saxberg.
Shebandowan Films has also been active in producing
music and corporate videos in Thunder Bay. You can
see some of the results on Youtube by clicking
here. See Finnish guitar legend Jukka Tolonen
and his band, Cool Train, back up the best talent
in Northwestern Ontario. Also see world guitar virtuoso,
Jason Carter perform with Ari Lahdekorpi and Esteban
Figueroa. For a real treat check out the Finnish
Reggae band, Conga Se Mene live at the Finnish Labour
Temple and look for Flamenco Caravan in concert.
If you like corporate videos, check out our production
for the Greenstone
Economic Development Corporation. Here we have
combined great footage with great music to assist
the municipality of Greenstone in attracting tourists,
new residents and businesses to their region.
In addition to producing films, the filmmakers at Shebandowan
Films also direct, edit and fill key positions on films
produced by others, and in film production, experience
is everything. For example, Kelly Saxberg, Shebandowan
Films' award-winning resident director and editor,
has recently completed the Gemini nomimated documentary, Letters
From Karelia, a National Film Board of Canada production
and was also the director of Rosies
of the North (NFB 1999). Kelly has also recently
directed two recent films for Les Productions Rivard, Le
printemps des voyageurs: La genèse (produced
in English as Voyageur Legacy: Our Story)
and Hinge of an Empire (in HD). Her
recent editing credits also include L’Ange de
Budapest a one hour documentary directed by Marcel
Collet, and Le
printemps des voyageurs, two, one hour Docu-dramas
in HD directed by Jean Bourbonnais. This experience
guarantees the quality of Shebandowan Films' productions
and makes us the first choice in filmmaking in Northwestern
Ontario.

Shebandowan Films is currently
engaged in the making of a pilot for an immigration/cooking
show called Perogy Nation and we are working on a
couple of dramas about Northwestern Ontario. In addition
to our own new projects, we are also co-producing
First Nations Initiative, a video series about mental
health and First Nation patients. The series includes
a half hour drama (shot in 16mm) and a documentary
about mental health issues. The series is a co-production
with Thunderstone
Pictures of Thunder Bay. |
